MINDFUCKER Album Guide

MINDFUCKER is the tenth studio album by Monster Magnet, released on March 23, 2018 through Napalm Records. Dave Wyndorf wrote every original song and shared production duties with longtime guitarist Phil Caivano. Wyndorf described the record as a return to straight-ahead rock after several longer psych-oriented albums, and the ten-track set runs just under fifty minutes.

Sessions took place at Shorefire Recording in Long Branch and Studio 13 in Red Bank, both in New Jersey. Wyndorf handled vocals, guitar, and keyboards. Caivano contributed guitar, bass, and background vocals. Bob Pantella played drums, Garrett Sweeny played guitar, and Chris Kosnik played bass. Joe Barresi mixed the record at JHOC Studios.

Two singles preceded the album. Mindfucker arrived in February 2018, followed by Ejection, a cover of the Hawkwind-related Robert Calvert song, in March. Lead track Mindfucker opens with a tight riff and a vocal hook built for live shows. Longer cuts like Soul and Drowning give the record room to stretch without losing momentum.

Critics and fans noted that MINDFUCKER sounded leaner than 2013's Last Patrol or the reworked Milking the Stars set from 2015. The album sits between the band's stoner-rock peak in the late 1990s and the cover-song collection A Better Dystopia that followed in 2021. Wyndorf kept the sci-fi and pulp-fiction themes in the lyrics while trimming away extended instrumental passages.

Some vinyl editions included bonus tracks You Can't Be Trusted and Utopia. Standard CD and digital releases carry the ten core songs. Physical copies shipped through Napalm Records with artwork tied to the album title.

Touring in 2018 and 2019 brought the new material to stages across Europe and North America. The band played full album sets alongside older favorites from Powertrip and Dopes to Infinity, giving newer listeners a path into the back catalog.
